Carpenter ants measure between a quarter and three-quarters of an inch and appear black and brownish in color. They nest in moist wood and damage your home by excavating and creating galleries and tunnels in the wood. The longer a colony is present in a structure, the greater the damage that can be done. These ants feed on protein and sugar. They do not eat wood.
